Returned To Sender – BBC Radio 4 Documentary
How far would you go for a fleeting human connection? For one man in Utah, the answer is: pretty much anywhere.
Clint Buffington spends his time where land meets sea, searching for a very specific treasure: messages in bottles that have drifted across oceans and decades. Over the past twenty years, Clint has recovered more than 140 bottles, each one carrying secrets that as Clint says, ‘make the world feel a little smaller – and maybe a little better, too.’
The messages reveal remarkable journeys: a German sailor who cast a note into the Bermuda Triangle on his birthday in 1979; three French women who paddled across the Atlantic to set a world record; Puerto Rican students at a crossroads; even a pair of tiny dolls wrapped in a spell.
Returned to Sender is a heart-warming story, full of magic and wonder. At a time when division and despair seem to dominate, Clint reminds us that genuine human connection is still worth seeking…

Bellboy – BBC Radio 4 Documentary
With his local church falling into disrepair, Marcus Vergette is fighting to save the bells that changed his life and whose sound holds his community together.
The 2001 Foot and Mouth crisis forced North Devon farmers into a traumatic 6 month lockdown, cut off from their neighbours and living with the death and destruction of their animals. When restrictions were finally eased, the ringing of church bells signalled the end of the lockdown, bringing communities back together. For artist and farmer Marcus Vergette it was a sound that would change his life.
Dark Crossing – BBC Radio 4 Documentary
Mike is a carpenter, a boat builder, and a keen amateur sailor. Now, in his sixties he feels the time has come for a big adventure, and he signs on as crew for a transatlantic sailing voyage . But when the skipper turns to tyranny and his only ally on board loses touch with reality, relentlessly optimistic Mike is faced with his own demons. There is no storm, no shipwreck, no sea monster. Only three men trapped together, each battling for their own sanity. With only the endless sea surrounding them, Mike soon realises he is the only one who can pull the crew and himself out of a very dark place.

Strandings – BBC Radio 4 Documentary
When Peter was thirteen, a blue-haired woman asked him to lift a freshly-hacked sperm whale jaw into her Volvo 245. That night in Norfolk marked the beginning of his lifelong bond and obsession with whales. Twenty-five years later, we join a group where Peter is learning how to re-float a two-tonne life-sized model of a pilot whale. As we follow this rescue in real time, Peter narrates a very different story: what happens to whales and to us when they breach the boundaries of the human world and how whale strandings entice a bizarre subculture of mystics, fetishists and scavengers.
