In this true crime adjacent series, each season sees private investigators Jacquie, Johannie, Kristin, CJ and Sam (New Light Investigations) focus on one habeas corpus case. Each reopened case casts a spotlight towards a flawed criminal justice system and the mortal price tags on racism, confirmation bias, shoddy police work and inadequate representation by lawyers. The details in the habeas corpus case will show us the various ways in which a conviction can be based on an unjust process and the implication it has on real people; setting the stage for criminal justice reform and why it matters.
In each episode of PI Janes we hear how the lives and work of the New Light private investigators intersect. While the PI Janes team works on a habeas corpus case (A-Story), identifying holes in police investigations, prosecutorial misconduct and any other legal errors, we explore their individual stories (B-Story), the challenging reality for women working in a male dominated field, the relationships between them and how they operate as an eccentric and successful crime-solving sisterhood.
